Spring 2015 Commencement

New app_smallerOn June 15, 2015, UO English graduated 164 majors, twenty-three MA candidates, and thirteen PhD candidates. Congratulations, graduates! Professor David Vázquez delivered the commencement address, encouraging graduates to continue to dream, “that the capacity to dream is at the core of what makes us human. To dream is to continue to maintain hope. To have aspiration in the face of difficulty is to challenge ourselves to make a better world.” Several students received special recognition at the ceremony: Joel Ekdahl was named the class of 2015 Valedictorian (read his address to the class); Samantha Elwood and Ian Stewart won Swig Essay Prizes for the best undergraduate essays submitted to an English class during each term, an award made possible by Mary and Steven Swig (BA, 1963); Steven Richardson II received the 2013-2014 A. Kingsley Weatherhead Essay Prize for the best undergraduate essay on Shakespeare, an award made possible by Gloria and Bob Lee in memory of Kingsley Weatherhead and to promote the undergraduate study of Shakespeare at the University of Oregon.
