Professor Alley’s lecture serves as an introduction to his UO Insight Seminar,  on George Eliot which will run on four consecutive Saturdays in February. Register here.

“Middlemarch” is often touted as the greatest English novel. Not everyone agrees, of course, but its reputation among students of 19th century British fiction is hard to beat. The author, Mary Anne Evans, published all her novels under male pen name “George Eliot,” so that her works would be taken more seriously in that benighted era.
