Meet Our English Alumni: Andréa Gilroy

Meet Our English Alumni: Andréa Gilroy

Winter term of this year (2022), I had the immense pleasure of taking my frst Comics Studies class at UO with Dr. Kelp-Stebbins. Before then, I’d had very little experience with the comic form and wasn’t totally sure how it would ft in with the English classes I’d taken in the past. Howver, I loved this class and the vast potential of the graphic narritive form to push the boundries and possibilities of traditional literary forms.

Talking to Andréa was the perfect opportunity to one, talk to someone who had pursued a love of comics into a career and two, check out the most welcoming, cute comic book store in Eugene. (If you haven’t frequented Books With Pictures yet, you should add it to your weekend itenerary).

Andréa was a really fun alumni to talk to because she came into UO as a graduate student, technically as a Comparative Literature scholar, but with an interest in pop culture and comic studies in particular. During her time as a Ph.D. student, Andréa not only participated in the comic studies program but helped teach some of them as an adjunct professor and even ran the program for a year when Professor Saunders was on sabbatical.
