Michael Copperman reflects on teaching, growing up in Eugene, and his book, TEACHER: Two Years in the Mississippi Delta.   

“I had until that point been relatively insulated from real poverty and struggle .... Spending time in the classroom with [fourth graders in a Mississippi Delta school] who were curious and bright and capable and some of them quite brilliant and who were bound and limited by a poverty caused by a history which was visible to the eye, I had to sort of reckon with my complicity in systems that are not just,” he said.
