Department Section Description:

ENG 470/570 Technologies and Texts Capstone As a capstone to the minor in Digital Humanities (DH), this course will give you an opportunity to create a term-length digital research project of your own. Projects will consider the creation, preservation, or circulation of stories in the public sphere or in academic culture. Class discussions will consider how humanities disciplines (English, Philosophy, History, Gender studies, Ethnic Studies, Languages, to name just a few) are leveraging digital culture to forge a new public discourse, and to expand traditional academic studies. Possible term-length projects include:

  • The creation of a digital edition (interpretation) of a text
  • The creation of a digital archive or exhibit
  • The development of a digital public humanities project tied to a nonprofit, museum, or
  • cultural heritage site
  • A digital exploration of a social justice issue (an issue from the present or past)
  • A creation of a digital modeling or textual analysis project to study the stakes of words
  • and their circulation
  • The creation of a digital storytelling project
  • The creation of a digital game
  • The creation of a digital map to interpret or imagine a (counter) narrative

This course will emphasize the importance of both writing and maker culture to address real-world humanities questions. We’ll consider how digital tools compliment, expand, challenge, or embolden cultural and print narratives; and how we might use digital tools strategically and thoughtfully to advance our understanding of the cultural record in the past and present. Enrollment in English 470 is limited to those who’ve passed ENG 250: Literature and Digital Culture and two additional courses approved for the DH minor. English 470 is a requirement for the DH Minor. Contact Professor Kaufman with questions (hkaufman@uoregon.edu).
